Here's how gun incidents actually ended taken from the latest report from the FBI. 56 percent ended when the shooter took his or her own life or stopped shooting or fled the scene. 26 percent terminated with the shooter and police volleying gunfire; nearly all of those gunman were either wounded or dead in the end. In 3 percent of shootings studied by the FBI, the shooter was successfully disarmed/restrained by
unarmed civilians. In only 3 percent of the incidents in the studied shootings were gunman
confronted by armed civilians and some of those were security forces who were on duty.
