LETTER TO THE EDITOR:
I’ve
been vocally supporting various NH candidates, both Republican and
Democratic, in this important election year. I was going to quietly
vote for Emmett Soldati to represent the North Country in the Executive
Council—mostly because the incumbent (Joe Kenney) has been low-energy
disinterested in the environmental problems we’ve been facing from a
ruinous landfill project and the docile state agency trying to
greenlight it.
But
Kenney’s party has just today—at the last possible moment—mailed out an
attack ad on Soldati that should disgust any warm-blooded human.
Emmett is a London School of Economics grad, an activist helping
subsistence farmers adapt to climate change, and yes, the owner of two
cafés that also present music and comedy at night.
The
mailer reduces his entire accomplishments to the term “drag show host,”
and stokes fears that he would somehow (?) “mandate drag shows for
everyone.”
Here
in Coös, we finally see the light at the end of the Carrie Gendreau
tunnel—two years of demonizing everyone trying to live free in ways that
bother the bigoted, and seeing our area embarrassed in newspapers
worldwide. This mailer lets everyone know that Joe Kenney is fine with
that kind of character assassination, against his opponent but
implicitly against countless NH citizens trying to enjoy life without
prejudice.
Soldati
already deserved serious consideration for his fresh ideas and
talent—but now I urge voters to send a message to the NH GOP, that
hateful actions have electoral consequences.
